What Is Vintage Furniture?

What Is Vintage Furniture?

“Vintage” is one of the most used (and misused) terms in the design world. But what does it actually mean? And how does vintage differ from antique or retro?

Whether you’re a seasoned collector or just starting to explore timeless design, understanding what qualifies as vintage furniture helps you shop smarter and appreciate the beauty and history behind every piece.

How Old Is “Vintage”?

In general, vintage furniture refers to pieces that are at least 20 years old but less than 100. Once a piece hits the 100-year mark, it’s typically considered an antique.

This means furniture made between the 1920s and early 2000s can technically be vintage, but most design lovers associate the term with the golden eras of the 1950s to 1970s, especially mid-century modern design.

Vintage vs Retro vs Antique

  • Vintage: Authentic, older furniture from a previous era
  • Retro: Newly made furniture that mimics the look of a past era
  • Antique: Furniture that’s 100+ years old

If a 1960s Danish teak sideboard was made in 1963, it’s vintage. If it was made last year to look like it’s from the 60s, it’s retro.

What Makes Vintage Furniture Special?

  • Craftsmanship: Many vintage pieces were made with solid wood, hand-finished details, and time-tested joinery
  • Design History: From Bauhaus to Scandinavian modernism, vintage pieces reflect key design movements
  • Sustainability: Buying vintage reduces waste and gives new life to old materials
  • Storytelling: Every scratch, patina, or quirk tells a story, making each piece one of a kind

How to Tell If a Piece Is Truly Vintage

  • Look for maker’s marks or labels underneath or inside
  • Check for signs of age, like patina, wood oxidation, or older hardware
  • Inspect the materials—real teak, rosewood, walnut, or solid brass are often giveaways
  • Study the construction (e.g., dovetail joints, hand-planed wood, or original finishes)

Pro Tip: A dealer can usually help you authenticate a piece—feel free to ask questions about origin, age, and materials.

Why Vintage Is Still So Relevant Today

Vintage furniture blends beautifully with modern interiors, adding warmth, history, and character that newer pieces often lack. Whether you’re designing a minimalist condo or a richly layered home, vintage brings soul into the space.
